Following yet another exciting week of Big East play, the conference handed out its weekly awards on Monday morning. Once again, the awards are bound for Cincinnati and Jamaica, Queens as Xavier Musketeers forward Trevon Bluiett and St. John’s Red Storm guard Marcus LoVett are the recipients of the Player and Freshman of the Week honors respectively.
Bluiett, a junior, wins the POTW honor for the second consecutive week after his terrific performances against Cincinnati and St. John’s. This past week, he and the Musketeers went 2-0 vs. the Seton Hall Pirates and Creighton Bluejays. The Indianapolis native was instrumental in those victories, amassing a total of 40 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, just seven turnovers (in 76 minutes) a block and two steals. Bluiett went off for 24 points in the win over Seton Hall and on the whole, shot 15-for-28 from the field.
LoVett meanwhile was extraordinarily helpful in guiding the Red Storm to a 1-1 effort against the Marquette Golden Eagles and Villanova Wildcats. He scored a total of 40 points as well, matching Bluiett’s totals, whilst compiling five rebounds, 11 assists, seven turnovers (in 62 minutes), a block and a ridiculous seven steals in the two games played this past week. The Fort Wayne native continued to be stellar efficiently, shooting 15-for-26 this past week. This is Marcus LoVett’s first Freshman of the Week award and fifth of the season for St. John’s, with star youngster Shamorie Ponds holding claim to the other four including last week’s honor.
