Mount Saint Mary’s vs. Marquette 2017 final score: Golden Eagles take care of business

Didn’t even break a sweat.

NCAA Basketball: Maine at Marquette Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Despite Markus Howard’s status being a relative unknown for most of the week, he played in Marquette’s season-opening 80-59 victory over Mount Saint Mary’s.

Howard finished with 11 points in the win, but his status of being able to play was surely a positive for the Golden Eagles.

Andrew Rowsey led the team with 23 points on 7-16 shooting, and also tied for the team-high with five assits with Sacar Anim.

Haanif Cheatham and Matt Heldt had 13 points each.

This game was never all that close as Marquette got out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back. They also won the turnover and assist battle.

One interesting note was that 59 points marks the fewest points allowed was one of Marquette’s stingiest defensive efforts under Steve Wojciechowski. Defense was the big question for the Golden Eagles coming into the year, and if they can remain at this level, good things will happen.

Junior Robinson led Mount Saint Mary’s with 20 points.

Marquette will be off until Tuesday when they welcome Purdue to Milwaukee as part of the Gavitt Games.
