Preview
Regardless of the victor in this game, a losing streak will be snapped. After starting Big East play 2-0, St. John’s jumped on a two-game skid, falling to Creighton and Xavier. Georgetown, on the other hand, has had it much worse. The Hoyas are 0-4 to open Big East play for the first time since 1998-99.
Three of the Big East’s top six scorers will be in action, as Georgetown guard Rodney Pryor (18.6 PPG, 4th) meets up with St. John’s guards Marcus LoVett and Shamorie Ponds (5th and 6th, respectively. 18.1 and 17.8 PPG). While neither team has been particularly great this year, these players have represented bright spots. It should be interesting to see how the young Johnnies handle the experienced scorer in Pryor and who the Hoyas matchup with LoVett and Ponds defensively to try and slow them down.
At the end of the day, the Hoyas likely have the advantage with their frontcourt of Bradley Hayes, Marcus Derrickson, and Jessie Govan. Frontcourt has been St. John’s biggest weakness this season, with 2016 Big East All-Freshman team member Kassoum Yakwe going through a slump.
Another stat to remember: Georgetown shoots 38.9% from beyond the arc (44th in the nation) while St. John’s defends the three at a 36% clip (225th in the nation). If the Hoyas can get hot from deep, it will be a long night for the Red Storm.
