Back on January 19, 2016, the Georgetown Hoyas rolled into Cincinnati to meet with the Xavier Musketeers. At the time, X was riding high on a four-game winning streak and in the midst of one of their best starts in school history. As history would tell it, Xavier hit a bump in the road that day as the Hoyas scored a big road win that at the time put them at 5-2 and ahead of Xavier in the Big East standings as they were 4-2 following the loss.
Flash forward almost an entire year later and things couldn’t be more different. Georgetown is on the verge of sputtering if they haven’t already stumbled down to the ground and Xavier is reeling through a three-game losing streak that gets more treacherous by the day.
Neither team is situated particularly well in the Big East standings as the Hoyas sit ninth with a mark of 1-5 in Big East play while Xavier is in the middle at fifth with a 3-3 record in conference.
It would take quite a feat for either team, Georgetown being far more improbable to this point, for them to make serious noise at this point as we near the middle of the Big East season and both teams can ill afford even more slip-ups along the way.
These teams have already met once this season back on New Year’s Eve. X picked up an 81-76 victory that day, which to is their only win in a true road game. They’ll be tested later this week against crosstown rival Cincinnati, but this matchup won’t boost their profile too much. It could only hurt it if the Hoyas were able to knock them off for the second consecutive year.
Needless to say the scene will be tense in Cintas Center on Sunday. One fanbase (Georgetown) has already tapped out to the displeasure that the team has brought them in the 2016-17 season and another (Xavier) could find themselves in a precarious position if things don’t go as planned.
