Line: St. John’s opened as nine-point favorites, but the line has shifted to 8.5.
O/U: 149
Records ATS: DePaul 6-12 | St. John’s 9-10
This game features two premier guards on either side in Eli Cain and Billy Garrett for DePaul and Shamorie Ponds and Marcus LoVett for the Red Storm. Of the four, Garrett is the only upperclassman. While Cain has struggled a bit in Big East play (11.6 PPG on 29% shooting in five Big East games), it feels like he’s destined to snap out of the cold spell and put up points as he did in the nonconference play. It’s also worth noting Cain led DePaul with 18 points in its 79-73 New Years Day loss to St. John’s.
Both DePaul and St. John’s have a transfer making a big impact this season, as DePaul JuCo transfer Tre’Darius McCallum is third in the Big East at 7.0 rebounds per game, and has been the lone bright spot in the Blue Demons frontcourt. If McCallum finishes the season in the top five in the conference in rebounding, he’ll be the first Blue Demon to do such since Mac Koshwal in 2008-09.
St. John’s Bashir Ahmed is also a JuCo transfer. The junior forward has been a very serviceable third scoring option between LoVett and Ponds, coming into this one averaging 12.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Like DePaul, St. John’s has had its share of frontcourt issues. Ahmed is an exception.
