Team USA Basketball vs. France Rio Olympics 2016 final score: Klay Thompson comes up large in 100-97 victory

Once again, Team USA was pushed to the limit as a recurring theme reared its head down in Rio on Sunday afternoon. Like the previous four occasions though, the United States was able to will themselves to victory to remain unbeaten in Olympic play, tallying a 100-97 over France to improve to 5-0.

The star of the game was Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson who had been mired in struggles similar to those that he had in the 2016 NBA Final.s Thompson though shot himself out of the slump and scored 30 points in the three-point victory over France. Thompson shot 9-for-16 from the field, 7-for-13 from the 3-point line and 5-for-7 from the free throw line in a brilliant all-around performance.

Former Big East stars Jimmy Butler and Kyle Lowry combined for just two points in the victory though as they were held down in limited minutes. Lowry played just 13 minutes and had three assists and a rebound while Butler played only six and converted on the only field goal he attempted.

Carmelo Anthony, former Big East Rookie of the Year for current ACC resident Syracuse, was off his usual stellar game. Anthony scored only 10 points and did so on 11 shots and was 2-for-7 from the 3-point line. Melo added five assists, four rebounds and a steal to his line in the win.

The quarterfinals now await Team USA as we’ll find out who their opponent will be as the week progresses. Quarterfinal games will be played on Wednesday, August 17.
