The Morning Fast Break (Nov. 11, 2016): It’s college basketball’s opening day!

College basketball begins tonight!!

NCAA Basketball: Georgetown at Xavier Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Folks, we’ve finally made it.

College basketball starts today!

Here’s what’s going on in your favorite conference’s favorite conference.

The game Cheatham (Anonymous Eagle)

Do you realize that we watched the fourth best freshman scoring season in Marquette history last season? Were you aware you saw the seventh best field goal percentage season by a Marquette freshman? Did you notice that you witnessed just the second season by a freshman with 100 made free throws? I ask these questions because none of these things apply to Henry Ellenson, who was selected #18 overall in the 2016 NBA Draft. No, these things apply to Haanif Cheatham, who is back for round two in blue and gold with the second best returning scoring average and the highest minutes played average.

Myles is close to a return (Banners on the Parkway)

If paying restitution and court costs sounds a lot like paying money to have a charge go away, welcome to how the world works. Myles has replaced what he broke and compensated the judiciary for using its time, so... that’s that done. With one of the charges out of the way (a phrase I hate typing about a Xavier player), Myles is closer to being able to rejoin the team.

Good Mourning, look at the valedictorian (Casual Hoya)

The son of ‘Zo committed to Georgetown over Duke and Florida two years ago. We didn’t know much about Mourning at the time. It was clear he was the least developed player of what was otherwise a stellar class, but it was uncertain if his offers to play at Duke and Florida were sincere or merely attempts to land a high profile name like Mourning.

Previewing the Johnnies! (Rumble in the Garden)

These are mountains for Chris Mullin to climb, coaching-wise, as he seeks to prove that he is the man for the job of building the St. John’s program into the consistently competitive program the Redmen were in the 80’s and the renamed Red Storm were at the beginning of the century.

Hart, Jenkins up for the Naismith (VU Hoops)

Villanova seniors Josh Hart and Kris Jenkins have been named by the Atlanta Tipoff Club to the watch list of 50 players in consideration for the 2017 Naismith Men’s College Player of the Year.
