On the verge of breaking out all season, Andrew Chrabascz arrived on the conference scene against the Georgetown Hoyas Saturday afternoon. In front of a nationally TV audience, the freshman forward scored 24 points in 34 minutes of playing time for the Butler Bulldogs, both career highs.
Chrabascz's performance marked the high point in an otherwise frustrating game for the Bulldogs, as Butler fell to 2-9 in the Big East. Nine conference losses marks the most for the Butler program since 2005, when they went 7-9 in the Horizon League.
All-conference contender Markel Starks scored 19 and added seven assists for the Hoyas who become the sixth Big East team to reach five conference wins on the season.
Butler Breakdown-
Chrabascz's 24 points came on 9-13 shooting. The most efficient offensive player for Butler in limited minutes all season, it was impressive to see him go off now that Brandon Miller has shown some faith in him. The freshman is Butler's best hope for the rest of the season and moving forward with how frustrating the Bulldogs' offensive attack has been this year.
Kellen Dunham had his best long-range shooting game in a while for the Bulldogs, making 3 of 6 from three-point land. Just one of his four field goals came in the second half, however, as Chrabascz carried the load for as long as Butler could stay close. His backcourtmate Alex Barlow fouled out in 35 minutes after scoring four points and dishing out a pair of assists.
Khyle Marshall and Kameron Woods pulled down five rebounds a piece. For Woods, it was his second-lowest haul of the conference season. He's now gone five-straight without a double-digit rebounding game. He's also two of nine shooting in his past two games.
Off the bench, Butler got bad Elijah Brown again. The freshman guard has shown flashes of talent at times, but missed all of his four attempts from the field Saturday afternoon. Erik Fromm finished with two points and three rebounds and probably won't see his minutes get out of the low teens again this year with the was Chrabascz has been playing.
Chrabascz added four rebounds, an assist, and a block to his stat line today. Not a great rebounding line for a Big East forward who is getting starter's minutes, but his scoring ability more than makes up for that right now. In a conference season that Butler fans can't wait to forget, Chrabascz provides a decent diversion.
