The Hoyas started the game winning the tip-off and scored on their first possession after a Jabril Trawick layup to take an early 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for Georgetown that would be the last time they would lead at any point in the game. Oregon was able to attack with ease and it led to 44 free throw attempts for the Ducks compared to just 30 for the Hoyas. Not only did the Ducks get to the free throw line at will, but they made the most of those chances shooting 81.8 percent from the charity stripe. Georgetown shot just 66.7 percent from the line, but that wan't their biggest problem of the night. Georgetown was never able to find their stroke from three-point land shooting just 6.7 percent (1-for-16) on the night.
"If Georgetown shot so poorly, than how did they stay in this game?" Well, I'm glad you asked. The answer starts and ends with UCLA transfer Joshua Smith. Smith dominated inside against the weak Oregon frontcourt scoring 25 points on 13 shots (that's really efficient). Smith had just about a perfect debut for the Hoyas, but his foul and rebounding issues may be something to monitor going forward as the Hoyas will need Smith and Nate Lubick to be consistent forces inside all season.
From Oregon's standpoint you have to pleased with the way this game played out. Oregon was able to win even with point guard Damyean Dotson having a rough night going 1-for-8 from the field and accumulated more turnovers than assists (3-to-1).
Houston transfer James Young minegated Dotson's struggles and carried the Ducks offense amassing 24 points on 11 shots. Young went a perfect 12-for-12 from the line, drilled a couple of three-pointers, and just wrecked havoc for the Georgetown defense all night.
The other Duck transfer Mike Moser had a successful debut scoring 15 points, grabbing seven rebounds, along with six steals.
It was a very good night for transfers as Moser, Smith and Young stole the show.
