Dave Gavitt, the founder of the Big East and long time commissioner, was honored with a street named after him today in Providence, RI. Gavitt was the central figure in forming the Big East as a basketball conference and was the commissioner from 1979-1990. Before helping to form the Big East and lead it, Gavitt was the head basketball coach at Dartmouth and Providence where he amassed a career record of 227-117 and took Providence to the NCAA Tournament five times.
