Super Bowl XLVI: Rutgers Second Most Represented On Super Bowl Rosters, Big East Has 15 Total Players

FOXBORO, MA - DECEMBER 24: Devin McCourty #32 of the New England Patriots celebrates intercepting a Miami Dolphins pass with teammate Rob Ninkovich during the fourth quarter of New England's 27-24 win at Gillette Stadium on December 24, 2011 in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Looking for a selling point for recruiting in the Big East? How about the Super Bowl? The Rutgers Scarlet Knights trail only Boston College's six players as having the most former players on the current Super Bowl rosters of the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.

The Big East (every team but Syracuse is represented) has 15 players between the rosters, which is tied for fourth with the Pac-12. The SEC leads all conferences and has 23 players on the rosters. Note: these totals don't take into account whether the player played in the conference (don't blame us, we didn't make the rules about this).

The Patriots have four former Scarlet Knights on the roster: Devin McCourty, Nate Jones, Tiquan Underwood, and Alex Silvestro. The New York Giants have former Rutgers player Brandon Bing on their practice squad.

The Pittsburgh Panthers have three players: Lousaka Polite (Patriots, active roster), Henry Hynoski (Giants, active roster) and Dorin Dickerson (Giants, practice squad)

The Connecticut Huskies landed two players on the rosters: Will Beatty (Giants, injured reserve), Donald Thomas (Patriots, active roster).

The South Florida Bulls also have two players: Jason Pierre-Paul (Giants, active roster), Jacquian Williams (Giants, active roster)

The Louisville Cardinals have Deion Branch (Patriots, active roster). The West Virginia Mountaineers have Selvish Capers (Giants practice squad). The Cincinnati Bearcats have Mike Wright (Patriots, injured reserve).

Last but not least, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is a Syracuse alum.

I wonder...

what our count would be if you add the players that were in the Big East from Miami, Boston College and VTech… which is most of them.

Those players competed in the Big East conference, against Big East programs.

For example, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Chris Snee all played their entire career in the Big East. Therefore, they should NOT be counted in the ACC count. Meaning… Big East should at the very least be ranked 3rd, ahead of the ACC.

I'm with you

this wasn’t our list and it was put together to highlight the schools, not the conferences. The Big East would add those guys who played before Miami, VT and BC left but lose Deion Branch and Mike Wright.

Big East > ACC

Definitely. I just thought worth noting because the BC article also ranks the conference based on amount of players… It says Big East with 15, but that does not include Antrel Rolle, Will Blackmon, Dan Koppen, Mathias Kiwanuka or Chris Snee who all played most of their career, if not all of it, in the Big East.

Even taking out Mike Wright and Deion Branch, we’re up to 18 players in Super Bowl which is pretty amazing for a conference. Snee and Koppen never played a down in the ACC, so take them away from ACC’s count of 19, and you get 17.

Big East 18 > ACC 17

How could I forget Vince Wilfork… Who also played his entire career in the Big East. so…

Big East 19 > ACC 16

Upcoming schools...

Patriots have tackle Sebastian Vollmer from Houston and cornerback Sterling Moore of SMU, both on the active roster. They also (quite famously, I believe) have Shun White of Navy on Reserve/Military.

Okay, somebody in the Big East has made this necessary. "BC" in my nickname references the icon. I AM NOT A BOSTON COLLEGE FAN.
