Maalik Wayns Named Big East Basketball Player Of The Week, JayVaughn Pinkston Rookie Of The Week

The Big East released their list of weekly honors today. Maalik Wayns of the Villanova Wildcats won Player of the Week and JayVaughn Pinkston of Villanova won Rookie of the Week honors.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The BIG EAST Conference has named Villanova guard Maalik Wayns and forward JayVaughn Pinkston the winners of the conference's weekly men's basketball honors for the week-ending Jan. 22.

Wayns was named BIG EAST Player of the Week after he averaged 26.5 points - the most by a BIG EAST player last week - to help the Wildcats to a pair of conference wins. He scored 25 points with seven assists and five rebounds in an 84-76 win against Seton Hall and had 28 points on 10-of-18 shooting in a 79-76 overtime win at St. John's. Wayns, who has averaged 30.7 points in his last three games, averaged 5.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 91.3 percent from the free throw line last week. He is the BIG EAST scoring leader in conference games at 20.6 points per game.

Pinkston was tabbed as BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after he had a pair of double-doubles - the first two of his career - in Villanova's 2-0 week in which he averaged 18.0 points and 11.5 rebounds. He had 23 points and 11 rebounds in an 84-76 win against Seton Hall and scored 13 points with 12 boards in a 79-76 overtime win at St. John's.

Jae Crowder, Marquette, F, Sr.
Averaged 16.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 1.5 blocks in a 2-0 week. Had 14 points, 11 rebounds and six steals in a 74-63 win against No. 23/21 Louisville.

Jack Cooley, Notre Dame, F, Jr.
Averaged 13.0 points and 9.5 rebounds while shooting 69.4 percent from the field in a 1-1 week. Had 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 67-58 win against top-ranked and previously unbeaten Syracuse.

Jawanza Poland, USF, G, Jr.
Averaged 17.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week. Scored 19 points with five rebounds in a 75-59 win at DePaul.

Kevin Jones, West Virginia, F, Sr.
Averaged 25.5 points and 10.0 rebounds while shooting 70.4 percent from the field in a 2-0 week. Had 26 points and 13 rebounds in a 77-74 overtime win against Cincinnati.
