Big East Statement on Syracuse Extra Point Against Toledo

You might have seen the horrible call on the extra point in the Syracuse-Toledo game earlier today. If not, review it here. The Big East realized they botched it and released the following statement:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 24, 2011) -- BIG EAST Conference coordinator of football officiating Terry McAulay has issued the following statement, with regard to a play in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s football game between Syracuse and Toledo.

"After studying the videos of the Syracuse extra point attempt at 2:07 of the fourth quarter, we have concluded that the ruling on the field that the kick passed between the uprights was incorrect, and that the replay official made an error in failing to reverse that ruling.  In reviewing the video, we have determined that the angle from behind the kicking team shows conclusively that the ball passes outside the right upright.

Our review of the process determined that the replay official mistakenly focused his attention on the sideline angle, which proved to be distorted. We are confident that our officiating staff will learn from this situation in order to prevent a reoccurrence. "

Whoops? I guess you can't accuse the league of being biased against a team which is leaving the conference so far. Let's see if things change when conference play begins.

Two reviews that show different outcomes isn’t conclusive evidence – They got the call right because you need conclusive evidence to reverse a call.

The field goal was missed.

It was conclusive, the brown football eclipsed the yellow goal post. Just because you can’t see well from one angle, it doesn’t mean you can’t rely on any angle. It’s the same with distance.

If that call were properly made, traitor Syracuse almost certainly loses.

it was an extra point, not a field goal

and since late-game strategy is radically different depending on whether a field goal will win or tie, it’s impossible to know what the outcome of the game would have been if it had been ruled correctly (though the most probable outcome is that the Orange win in regulation).

There's a fine line

between being a traitor and saving yourself.

But that was a botched call, hands down. Poor officiating even in replays….reason 521 for leaving the Big East behind.

Too bad there hasn't always been a DH...then we never would have to hear about this Ruth guy...

Really dude? He clearly missed the FG. End of story. They freaking blew it

and gave a game to Syracuse that they should have lost. Embarassing

It was a PAT

not a field goal.

it was a typo.

I knew that, sorry for the typo.

LOL...Clearly you didn't watch the game...

These officials completely blew 2 calls that would have given Syracuse the game in regulation far before this PAT. They clearly missed a pass interference call in the end zone on Toledo and missed a personal foul call on Toledo when their defender ripped off Bailey’s helmet by the facemask.

Both 15 yarders and first downs. I don’t wanna hear about how this 1 pt PAT crap affected the outcome of the game. Watch the game and tell me you couldn’t call holding on their outside receiver on every flat and bubble screen they ran. Wonder how they had 120 yards alone on those plays.

Basically:

“DERP! We messed up! Sorry Toledo.”

Maybe that sorry was followed by “Want an invite?”

The Big East

really should invite Toledo. They could do a lot worse and not much better. They play good teams close and can beat “better” teams. A better option than Army and/or Navy football wise and not a smaller market for the team (I would imagine, nothing to back that up with – the exception being the Army/Navy game).

However the basketball not being top-notch would probably block them from getting an invite.
