Big East Files Countersuit Against West Virginia

Now for more realignment legal news, the Big East has filed a countersuit against West Virginia. The suit was filed today in Providence County, Rhode Island (you know, where the Big East is located). The suit is for breach of contract. It "seeks an order requiring West Virginia to comply with BIG EAST Bylaws, as well as damages resulting from West Virginia's improper attempted withdrawal in violation of these bylaws."

Here is commissioner John Marinatto's statement:

Today’s legal action underscores The BIG EAST Conference’s stated position that it will vigorously pursue the enforcement of its rights and West Virginia University’s obligations under the conference’s Bylaws which West Virginia formally agreed to and helped construct.

This countersuit was expected, especially after yesterday when we found out that Boise State along with the other schools invited to join the Big East could not do so before the 2013 season.
